How to Remove Candle Wax (From Jars, Fabric, Surfaces & Skin)

Candle wax comes off almost anything once you use temperature to your advantage — freeze it to pop it out, or gently warm it to lift it, depending on the surface. Here's how to remove wax from jars, fabric, carpet, hard surfaces, and skin without damage.

From a candle jar (to empty or reuse)

The easiest methods for leftover wax in a jar:

  • Freezer method: Put the jar in the freezer for a few hours. The wax shrinks and pops out with a gentle nudge from a butter knife.
  • Hot water method: Pour boiling water into the jar (leaving room), and the wax melts and floats to the top. Let it cool, then lift off the solid disc. Don't pour melted wax down the drain — it clogs pipes.
  • Warm-and-wipe: For a thin residue, warm the jar briefly and wipe with a paper towel.

Then clean with soap and warm water. To reuse the jar, see how to clean and reuse candle jars.

From fabric and clothing

  1. Let the wax harden (pop it in the freezer if you can, or use an ice pack), then scrape off the excess.
  2. Place a paper towel or brown paper bag over the spot, and run a warm iron over it — the wax melts and absorbs into the paper. Move to a clean section of paper and repeat.
  3. Treat any remaining color stain with stain remover and launder as usual. Check garment care labels first.

From carpet

Same idea: harden with ice and scrape, then lay a cloth over the spot and iron on low so the wax transfers to the cloth. Blot any dye stain with a carpet-safe cleaner.

From hard surfaces (wood, glass, counters)

Soften the wax gently with a hair dryer, then wipe with a soft cloth. For glass and metal, freezing to make it brittle and scraping with a plastic edge works too. Avoid metal blades on finished wood.

From skin

If wax gets on skin, let it cool and harden, then peel it off gently — don't pick at burned skin. Wash with warm soapy water. For an actual burn, cool it under running water and treat as a minor burn; seek care if it's serious.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get wax out of a candle jar?

Freeze the jar for a few hours and pop the wax out, or pour in boiling water so the wax melts and floats up to be lifted off once cool. Then wash with soap and warm water. Never pour melted wax down the drain.

How do you remove candle wax from clothes?

Harden the wax (freeze it), scrape off the excess, then place paper over the spot and run a warm iron so the wax absorbs into the paper. Treat any leftover dye stain and launder normally.

Does freezing really remove wax?

Yes — cold makes wax brittle and shrinks it, so it pops off jars and glass and scrapes off fabric and carpet easily. Freezing is the simplest first step for most wax removal.
